Day 10/11 – Venice

We arrived in Venice by train and took the public “boat” to our hotel, Westin Europa and Regina. Since we were backpacking, we were able to take the public boat easily.  To book this hotel, I used 12,000 Starpoints per night thanks to my American Express SPG Credit Card.  The hotel’s location was in the middle of the city near San Marco’s Square.  The hotel would have cost $500 a night without points!  We took a gondola, many boat rides, and ate lots of good food.  Here are some pictures of Venice.

Day 7 – Exploring Cinque Terre

We explored each of the five towns today.  Each town had its own unique flavor.  We started off in Monterosso, which is the most developed beach town resort.  I swam in the ocean for a while and we renting umbrellas to relax in the sun.  Afterwards, we took the train to each town and ate lunch/gelato/snacks.  We took a walk from the second town to the first town, called Lover’s Walk.  Cinque Terre has to be one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.

Day 6 – Train to Cinque Terre

We took the train to Cinque Terre, which is a region with five small beach towns along the coast.  The train was delayed and we didn’t get to our destination until around 6pm.  We stayed in the city of Corniglia, which was a small quaint town next to the beach.  The views were amazing.  I’ll let the photos do the talking.Image

Day 5 Rome

Went to the Vatican today. The museum was packed and when we arrived we were told that the Sistine chapel was going to close at 3. Since it was 230, we rushed to see it. Unfortunately there were crowds of people waiting. By the time we got there, it was closed. We did get to see a lot of great art along the way.

After the museum, we went to st. Peters basilica. We were able to see michaelangelo’s pieta.

We went to the travestere district for dinner. It was reasonably priced. About 40 bucks total. The pasta was great!

Day 4 Rome

This was the big day to see the colosseum. We relaxed in the apartment and had cappuccinos in the morning. We decided to go late afternoon when there were fewer crowds. The Colosseum was definitely amazing.

At night we went to adventure around the main station to look for Chinatown. There were a couple of Chinese restaurants but it was a disappointment.
